Stage 2 Fire Restrictions for Pitkin County
Stage 2 Fire restrictionshave been in place for Aspen and Pitkin County since August 8th, 2025.
With the summer heating up and vegetation drying out, the risk of wildfire in our region is rising rapidly. Due to persistent drought conditions, low fuel moisture levels, and critically high Energy Release Components (ERCs)—now matching those seen during the historic 2020 fire season—the following agencies are enacting Stage II Fire Restrictions effective Friday, August 8th:
➡️ BLM
➡️ US Forest Service
➡️ Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit
➡️ Pitkin County
➡️ Aspen Fire Protection District
➡️ And neighboring jurisdictions
This is a proactive move to reduce the chance of a human-caused wildfire ignition, especially as conditions resemble those during the East Troublesome Fire, which burned over 100,000 acres in under 24 hours.
***Although we’ve received some moisture over the past few weeks of August, our region remains in drought conditions. Much of the vegetation has already gone dormant, meaning it can no longer absorb and benefit from this late-season moisture. As a result, the fire danger across the area continues to be high.***
