Building a More Fire-Resilient Landscape

The Aspen Fire Protection District, in partnership with the City of Aspen, Pitkin County, the U.S. Forest Service, Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES), and the Aspen Wildfire Foundation, is conducting the Smuggler Wildfire Risk Reduction Project to reduce wildfire risk on the Smuggler hillside.

This project is designed to reduce hazardous vegetation, improve firefighter access, strengthen landscape resilience, support healthier forests, enhance wildlife habitat, and help protect nearby homes and infrastructure from future wildfires.

Wildfire is a natural part of Colorado's ecosystems, but decades of fire suppression, dense vegetation, and prolonged drought have increased the likelihood of fast-moving, high-intensity wildfires. Proactive vegetation management helps restore healthier forest conditions while reducing wildfire risk to surrounding communities.

Project Overview

The Smuggler hillside contains dense stands of trees, shrubs, and ladder fuels that can contribute to rapid wildfire spread under dry and windy conditions. Strategic fuels reduction will reduce hazardous vegetation while maintaining the natural character of the landscape.

Vegetation treatments will focus on creating healthier forest conditions by selectively thinning dense vegetation, removing ladder fuels, and reducing excessive fuel loading. The goal is not to clear vegetation, but to create a more resilient landscape that is better able to withstand wildfire while supporting long-term ecological health.

This work also improves firefighter access, allowing emergency personnel greater opportunities to safely and effectively respond if a wildfire occurs.

Project Goals

The Smuggler Wildfire Risk Reduction Project is intended to:

  • Reduce hazardous wildfire fuels
  • Slow wildfire spread and reduce fire intensity
  • Protect nearby homes and critical infrastructure

Project Area

The project is located on the Smuggler hillside above Aspen and includes areas identified as having elevated wildfire risk due to dense vegetation and accumulated fuels.

Vegetation treatments will occur throughout designated treatment areas while preserving healthy, fire-resilient trees and maintaining the natural appearance of the hillside whenever possible.

Project Phases

Phase One — Vegetation Management

Specialized forestry crews will perform selective vegetation management throughout the project area.

Treatments may include:

  • Selective tree thinning
  • Shrub and brush reduction
  • Removal of ladder fuels
  • Vegetation management within defensible space areas
  • Stacking woody material into temporary brush piles
  • Retaining healthy, fire-resistant vegetation whenever appropriate

Brush will generally be stacked into piles near treatment areas to minimize soil disturbance and reduce impacts to the surrounding landscape.

Phase Two — Pile Burning

Following vegetation treatments, local fire personnel will burn the accumulated brush piles when environmental conditions safely allow.

Pile burning will only occur when:

  • Adequate snow or ground moisture is present
  • Weather conditions support safe operations
  • Smoke dispersion conditions minimize impacts to surrounding areas

These burns are carefully planned and monitored to safely remove woody material while limiting smoke impacts on the community.
