Aspen Fire offers wildfire mitigation assessments for properties within our district. With a thorough assessment and proper mitigation efforts, your home’s chances of surviving a wildfire increase dramatically.*
PLEASE NOTE:
- Wildfire mitigation assessments start May 1 each year. They are not available from October 1 - April 30.
- Applications must be filled out by either the property owner or the property owner’s legal representative.
- Our recommendations are based upon those put forth by FireWise and the Colorado State Forest Service.

While the purpose of the Home Risk Assessment is to reduce the risk of fire damage to one’s home or property, following the requirements in the Assessment report does not guarantee prevention of such damage. Wildfire mitigation work around your home can give firefighters the best chance to defend and protect your property from wildfires and also substantially increase your safety and reduce the risk to life and property. However, wildfire is unpredictable and can be impossible to stop or control, regardless of what mitigation efforts you have taken. The Aspen Fire Department makes no warranties, guarantees or representations of any kind with respective to the effectiveness of any mitigation efforts you undertake in connection with your participation in the wildfire assessment program.
Frequently Asked Questions for Wildfire Assessments
Q. Can any home receive and assessment?
Any home or building within the Aspen Fire Protection District can and should be evaluated for its wildfire risk, so long as the evaluation is requested by the property owner.
Q: What does the assessment look at?
Our assessments look at all aspects of the building, from the construction inside and out, to the vegetation, and even the surrounding topography. Our assessment criteria comes from guidelines recommended by the Colorado State Forest Service and the FireWise program.
Q: Will getting an assessment force me to mitigate?
Our assessments are simply recommendations to help lower the wildfire risk to your home, neighborhood, and the Aspen area. While mitigation increases your home’s chances for survival, it also helps emergency responders in the event of a wildfire.
Q: Who can do the recommended mitigation?
There are many local tree companies and landscapers that can do the recommended mitigation work or you can do it on your own, the choice is up to you.
