Emergency Response

The Aspen Fire Protection District provides 24-hour emergency response services throughout Aspen and the surrounding service area. Emergency incidents may include structure fires, wildland and wildland-urban interface fires, hazardous materials incidents, technical rescues, vehicle accidents, and medical emergencies. Response times can vary depending on factors such as weather conditions, road access, seasonal traffic, incident location, and resource availability.

Aspen Fire operates from multiple strategically located stations throughout the district to provide efficient emergency response coverage. In addition to district resources, Aspen Fire works closely with the Aspen Ambulance District and neighboring fire agencies throughout the Roaring Fork Valley to provide coordinated emergency services and mutual aid when additional personnel, apparatus, or specialized resources are needed.

Fire Suppression Water Supply

Fire suppression operations within the Aspen Fire Protection District rely on a combination of municipal water systems, fire hydrants, apparatus-based water delivery, and alternative water sources. Aspen Fire maintains a diverse fleet of engines, water tenders, and specialized apparatus designed to support firefighting operations throughout the district's varied terrain and service area.

In areas served by municipal water systems and hydrants, firefighting resources can access a reliable water supply for suppression activities. In more remote locations where hydrants or municipal water systems are unavailable or limited, Aspen Fire utilizes apparatus with onboard water tanks, water tenders, and drafting operations from approved water sources to establish and maintain adequate fire flow for emergency operations.

Aspen Fire's Stations and Apparatus page includes information on each response vehicle, including water tank capacity (gallons) and pump capacity (gallons per minute, or GPM). This information can be helpful for property owners, insurance representatives, and developers seeking to better understand the fire suppression resources available within the district. Station locations, apparatus assignments, water tank capacities, and pump ratings can be found on the Stations and Apparatus page at https://www.aspenfire.com/stations-apparatus.

Additionally, Aspen Fire participates in mutual aid agreements with neighboring fire agencies, allowing for the rapid deployment of additional personnel, apparatus, water tenders, and specialized equipment during large or complex incidents. These partnerships enhance the district's ability to provide effective fire suppression services throughout the community.

Fire Hydrants and Access

Many developed areas within the Aspen Fire Protection District are served by pressurized fire hydrant systems. Hydrant availability and proximity vary depending on location, development type, terrain, and infrastructure. Property owners, developers, and interested parties may verify hydrant locations and emergency access requirements through site-specific review or by consulting the Aspen Fire Protection District Fire Marshal's Office.

The district maintains fire code requirements for emergency vehicle access, roadway design, and water supply to help ensure that fire apparatus can safely and effectively respond to emergencies. Compliance with these standards supports both firefighter safety and the district's ability to provide timely emergency response throughout the service area.

ISO RATING

Insurance Services Office (ISO) Classification

The Aspen Fire Protection District maintains Insurance Services Office (ISO) Public Protection Classification (PPC) ratings that are used by many insurance providers when evaluating fire protection capabilities and determining property insurance premiums. The PPC program assesses factors such as emergency communications, fire department resources, personnel, training, water supply, and community risk reduction programs.

Based on the most recent ISO evaluation, properties within the Aspen Fire Protection District are assigned one of the following classifications:

Class 4: Applies to properties located within five (5) road miles of Aspen Fire Protection District Stations 61, 62, 63, 64, and 65. This classification reflects the district's ability to provide fire suppression services through its network of fire stations, trained personnel, apparatus, and available water supply systems.

Class 10: Applies to properties located more than five (5) road miles from an Aspen Fire Protection District fire station. These areas are generally more remote and may experience extended response and water delivery challenges due to location, terrain, and access considerations.
