Highland Fire Information

The U.S. Forest Service is continuing to monitor the small wildfire detected Wednesday, 9/25/24, four miles southwest of Aspen above the Castle Creek Valley. It’s in a small tree island between avalanche chutes near timberline, surrounded by alpine vegetation and unlikely to spread beyond the island given current fuel conditions.

If you are out enjoying the spectacular fall colors this weekend in this area, you may notice the small smoke column from time to time. It’s called the Highland Fire due to its relative proximity to Highland Peak, but it is about three miles from the ski area.

Given that it is likely caused by lightning and in a remote, difficult-to-access area in Wilderness, we are letting the fire take its natural, beneficial role. We will take suppression action if needed.
